Workshop 1: Introduction to Metabolomics: What Can Your Blood Tell Us? v/Emaan Ghias, PhD student
What if we gave you a blood or urine sample and asked you to work out what the person had eaten or whether they had taken a drug? Could you solve the mystery using chemistry?
In this workshop, you will become a chemical detective and get an introduction to metabolomics - the study of the thousands of small molecules found in our bodies. These metabolites are constantly being produced, changed, and used as our bodies respond to food, medicines, exercise and our surroundings. We will discover how scientists use powerful instruments to detect these molecules and how their chemical patterns can provide clues about what has happened inside the body. Finally, you will put your detective skills to the test and investigate an unknown sample.

Workshop 2: Detection of laughing gas in traffic related crimes v/Anders Valentin Abildgaard Nielsen, M.D., Ph.d. student
Several fatal traffic accidents involving laughing gas has been reported in Denmark and law enforcement desperately needed tools to detect and stop this dangerous behaviour. We have done experiments with volunteers in order to find the best method to detect laughing gas, both at roadside and in the laboratory. These new methods are now being used in real law enforcement cases.

Workshop 3: How Do Psychoactive Drugs Affect the Brain and Body? v/Signe Sif Hansen, PhD student
How do psychoactive substances such as cocaine and heroin affect the brain and body? Why do we even have biological systems that these drugs can influence, and could some of these substances be used as medicines?

In this workshop, we will explore how psychoactive drugs interact with the body's natural signaling systems and learn how scientists study their effects. At the Department of Forensic Medicine, researchers develop new methods to detect both known and new drugs and investigate how they work in the brain and body. You will step into the role of a forensic researcher and use knowledge of the body's natural systems to help develop a new method for detecting psychoactive compounds.
