The Life and Legend of the Sultan Saladin
When Saladin recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187, returning the Holy City to Islamic rule, he sent shockwaves throughout Christian Europe and the Muslim Near East that reverberate today.
Jonathan Phillips is Professor of History of the Crusades at Royal Holloway, University of London. He is the author of numerous books on the crusades – and most recently ‘The Life and the Legend of the Sultan Saladin’ from 2019.
In this livestream Phillips will give a short introduction to the man and the legend of the Sultan Saladin, describing the relentless action of his life and tracing its aftermath through culture and politics all the way to the present day.
45-60 minutes presentation and 15 minutes Q&A. Moderated by Noa Kjærsgaard Hansen.
