International Business

v/Ingo Kleindienst, Associate Professor of Strategy, Institut for Virksomhedsledelse

International business impacts firms probably more significantly than ever before. Domestic markets are increasingly penetrated by foreign rivals, fiercely competing for customers. Some of the factors that have contributed to the emergence of this new competitive landscape are reduced trade and investment barriers, lower transport and communication costs, the ongoing international integration of capital markets and the extension of regional trade and investment agreements. In light of this, some have argued that markets are converging and that the world is flat – implying that there is no difference between doing business at home or abroad.

In this event, we will challenge this proposition arguing that despite the aforementioned developments, markets are different. In particular, we will shed light on the concept of distance, which is one of the – if not the – main concepts in international business.  As such, the concept of distance helps explaining why despite the alleged convergence of markets foreign competitors often fail in markets other than their home market. After having talked on the concept of distance and its impact on firms engaging in international business we will turn to a case study that it intended to highlight the effect distance may have in the context of international business. We close the event with a discussion of the case study and a wrap up of the lecture-part.
