This lecture explores the exciting world of architected materials—materials engineered not just by what they are made of, but how they are structured. Unlike traditional materials, their properties are derived from intricate designs at the micro, meso, and macro scales, allowing us to overcome limitations imposed by scarce or unsustainable resources. By optimizing structure rather than relying solely on chemical composition of material, we can create stronger, lighter, and more durable materials while reducing waste. These innovations are key to tackling global challenges, from sustainable construction to energy-efficient transportation. Architected materials can replace or enhance conventional materials, reducing dependence on environmentally harmful extraction processes. They also enable performance-driven solutions, such as self-healing composites, ultra-lightweight aerospace structures, and advanced biomaterials for healthcare. The lecture will highlight cutting-edge research, showing how we can tailor properties like fracture resistance, flexibility, and thermal performance to specific needs. With computational design and advanced manufacturing, we can now create materials that were once thought impossible. Architected materials are transforming engineering and they are deemed to redefine how we think about sustainability, efficiency, and innovation in material science.
